Arsenal's Title Defence Starts in Cardiff Without Saliba and Timber

Arteta wants the first trophy on Sunday. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are out. Rice, Saka, and Zubimendi can be involved after no pre-season minutes.

Mikel Arteta told Friday's presser that the best version of Arsenal has to be on Sunday, and that the way to start the season is by lifting the first trophy. He will try that without William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, the two defenders who organise the back line.

The Community Shield is 15:00 BST at the Principality Stadium. Manchester City arrive as FA Cup winners under Enzo Maresca. The sheets are not out yet. The absences already are.

What we can actually say

Arsenal's own preview is blunt. Saliba is in rehab on a back issue. Timber is a few weeks from a full return after the groin injury that forced him to miss the World Cup. Arteta, in the full transcript, called Saliba's problem "more a long-term injury" and said Timber is on the pitch, ramping "volume and the load," still not ready.

Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Zubimendi have yet to feature in pre-season. They trained this week. Arteta said they will be available, and "if they are in the condition we expect them to be in, they will be involved." Rice and Saka came back from England's World Cup semi-final with individual programmes. Arteta said the last two or three days looked "really good."

Bruno Guimaraes is already in after the £75m move from Newcastle. Myles Lewis-Skelly's role, Arteta said, "depends what happens with the squad, how he trains and the position."

What Arsenal lose without Saliba and Timber

Saliba is the organiser. When he talks, the line holds its distances. Without him, the first contact on a City corner becomes a public test on the afternoon Maresca has already named set-pieces as the Premier League's big change. Arsenal's title season scored 25 set-piece goals, 19 from corners. They also have to defend the same tax.

Timber is the repair kit. He can play right-back, step inside, or fill at centre-back when the picture turns ugly. The groin issue has been with him since March. Arteta would not even promise him before the international break. "He needs to start training with the group in the next week or so, hopefully." Cardiff is too soon, and City know it.

Arsenal's own preview, via Adrian Clarke, frames Maresca's first look as a 1v1 problem for wingers. Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo are the names attached to that. Timber is usually the player who can live with that isolation on the right. Without him, whoever starts there has to survive those duels, or the midfield cheats across and leaves the middle open for Elliot Anderson, signed from Nottingham Forest for a record English fee Arsenal put at £116m.

What the available players are being asked to do

Rice is being asked to look like the title-season anchor after a World Cup semi-final and no club minutes. If he starts beside Guimaraes, that pair has to own second balls and the space behind the first press. If he comes off the bench, someone else has to do that job for an hour against a City side Maresca has already refused to call a friendly.

Saka is being asked for the "something else" Arteta said he can see in him and Martin Odegaard after last season's consistency dropped. A Shield start would be trust. A late cameo would be protection before Coventry on Friday. City will test whether those legs can still recover when the ball turns over.

The risk if the standard meets the absences

Arteta named the standard as maximum on day one. The squad he actually has is missing its two most important defenders and easing three World Cup returnees back without a pre-season match between them.

If he starts Rice and Saka cold, the stake is minutes and trust before the league begins. A heavy Cardiff load can follow them to the Emirates five days later. If he protects them, the back line without Saliba and Timber has to survive 90 minutes that go straight to penalties. Maresca's quote sits on City's own site: "no friendly game at all." City will run at the gaps. A sloppy first trophy night becomes a week of questions Arteta invited by promising the best version on Sunday.

What to watch before kick-off

Watch the team sheet around 14:00 BST for who starts at centre-back and on the right. Watch whether Rice and Saka start or wait. Watch the first Arsenal corner and the first City corner, because that is where Saliba's absence shows first. Watch whether Lewis-Skelly's name sits in midfield or on the flank.

Then watch Friday. Arsenal host Coventry to open the Premier League. Cardiff does not put points on the board. It does tell you which compromises Arteta is willing to live with for five days.
