On 8 August 2026, Arsenal completed a deal for the Brazil midfielder on a four-year contract with the option of a further year. Guimaraes left Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga to finalise the move.
He called it one of the toughest decisions of his life. That is not press-release poetry - it is the sound of a player who knows what Newcastle became for him.
“I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it,” he said after the move.
Why does this matter beyond the fee?
Guimaraes joined Newcastle in January 2022 with the club in relegation trouble. He became central to the revival under Eddie Howe, then the first Newcastle captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy after the 2025 Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool.
He also featured in Champions League qualification campaigns in 2023 and 2025 before Newcastle finished 12th last season.
That arc matters. Arsenal are not buying potential. They are buying a midfielder who has already lived the hard years and still wants a harder stage.
What does it say about Arsenal’s title defence?
Champions usually protect the middle of the pitch. Arsenal went further: they removed a midfielder other clubs would have built a midfield around.
