Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 30 August, and the scoreboard only half-tells the story. Romeo Lavia opened on four minutes, Pedro Neto doubled the lead on 14, and Joao Pedro made it 3-0 on 32 before Brighton fans who had booed his name all afternoon had to watch him run over to celebrate. Malick Yalcouye replied on 35, a Pascal Gross shot deflected off Joao Pedro past Emiliano Martinez on 63, and Cole Palmer restored the two-goal cushion on 74. Gross headed in deep in stoppage time on 90+6. Xabi Alonso has two Premier League wins from two. The defensive work still looks like a project.
Martinez started 48 hours after Chelsea completed his £7.5m move from Aston Villa. He wanted a clean sheet. He got seven goals instead, including one that left his own defender helpless. Alonso told Sky Sports the World Cup winner had "charisma and aura" and that the squad would help him settle. Sunday was not the settling day anyone pictured.
How the game unfolded
Brighton arrived with a long injury list. Yasin Ayari, Georginio Rutter, Jack Hinshelwood, Kaoru Mitoma, and Yankuba Minteh were all out, per Sky Sports. Chelsea were without Enzo Fernandez for a second straight match amid Manchester City interest. Moises Caicedo came off hurt soon after his first appearance of the season.
None of that slowed the opening burst. Lavia reacted fastest when Bart Verbruggen spilled a corner on four minutes. Neto finished a Morgan Rogers cross on 14. Joao Pedro dragged wide from 10 yards on 25, then scored on 32 at the end of a counter Jorrel Hato started. He ran to the Brighton end to make his point.
Yalcouye thumped one in off the woodwork on 35. The second half belonged to Brighton on the ball. Sky Sports put Chelsea's possession at 25.6%, the club's lowest share on record in the Premier League, with only 146 successful passes. Martinez made several saves as Diego Gomez went close. Then Gross struck from range on 63 and Joao Pedro's touch sent the ball past his own goalkeeper.
Palmer settled the nerves on 74, driving forward and curling into the corner from the edge of the box. Brighton pushed until the end. Gross headed past Martinez on 90+6. The whistle followed almost immediately. Hurzeler told reporters his side "dominated" after the break and had chances to level at 3-3. He also said they "weren't clean enough in the basics."
Who stood up
Joao Pedro was the day's loudest figure. Sky Sports' Nick Wright noted Brighton supporters booed his name before kick-off and that he ranked top among Chelsea players for shots, touches in the opposition box, dribbles, and fouls won. Alan Smith said on co-commentary he had not seen the Brazilian play better. The own goal was a footnote on an afternoon when he won 13 duels, the second-highest total by any Premier League player this season according to Sky's match report.
Palmer scored for a second straight league game and looked like the finisher Chelsea need when the game opens up. Rogers added another assist after his goal against Fulham. Lavia's first Chelsea goal was the kind of alertness Alonso wants from a midfielder who spent last season injured.
For Brighton, Yalcouye's strike and Gross's late header showed the spirit Hurzeler praised. Verbruggen's early error cost them. Without Mitoma and Minteh wide, they still created enough to make Martinez work. The away side limited Chelsea to scraps for long stretches. The problem was the first 30 minutes, when the game was gone before the data turned in their favour.
What the win actually means
It means Chelsea sit on six points after two games with an attack that can overwhelm weaker defending and a back line that invites chaos. Alonso dismissed the possession numbers when asked, saying context mattered after 3-0 and that he never targets a percentage. Fair enough. Two wins are two wins. Martinez, Fernandez's future, and Caicedo's fitness are the live questions before the window shuts on 1 September.
Brighton remain a side that can trouble top-half teams even when depleted. Selling Carlos Baleba to Manchester United for up to £70m reshaped the midfield, and Sunday showed the replacement pieces are still finding rhythm. Hurzeler refused to use injuries as an excuse. That is the right tone. The table will punish slow starts anyway.
For Joao Pedro, the afternoon was personal. He left Brighton for Chelsea in the summer and returned to a hostile reception. He answered with a goal, an assist in the build-up to Neto's strike, and a celebration that told the away end exactly where he stood. The own goal will travel on highlight reels. The rest of his numbers explain why Alonso keeps picking him.
What comes next
Chelsea travel to Bournemouth next. Brighton host West Ham United. Alonso must decide whether Fernandez is still part of the squad by Tuesday evening, his own deadline for window business. Martinez needs a calmer night. Brighton need fit wingers.
Sunday was entertainment with receipts. Seven goals, one debut keeper, and a forward who scored at both ends. Chelsea will take the points. The defending will keep the coaching staff up late.
