Football media can tell you a midfielder’s release clause before it can tell you how he lives with pressure on a Thursday night in January.
That gap comes from the incentive structure.
The market ate the metaphor
Coverage learned the language of funds, PSR, squad cost ratios, and multi-club networks because those forces are real. Ignoring them would be unserious.
The failure is what happens next: the player becomes a vessel for the market story. Identity shrinks to nationality + price + “mentality question.”
When Bruno Guimaraes leaves Newcastle for Arsenal, the fee is information. The captaincy, the cup, the family decision, the messages from future teammates - those are the human plot. Both belong. Only one usually leads.
Why fans notice
Supporters do not need journalists to invent intimacy. They need journalists to stop flattening people into commodities with quotes glued on.
You can feel the difference in openings:
- Asset lead: “Club X have completed a £Y deal for…”
- Human lead: “He called it one of the toughest decisions of his life - then walked into a title defence.”
Same facts. Different respect.
What accountability looks like here
Accountability is not only club governance and referee truth-telling. It is also refusing to recycle stigma, mental-health voyeurism, or lazy diaspora stereotypes because they travel well on social feeds.
Write the culture around the player without turning private struggle into engagement bait.
The The Free Role rule
If you can replace the player with another name and the article still “works,” you wrote a template, not a story.
Our job is search-first publishing, yes - but search demand does not require dehumanisation. Evergreen pages and news hits both get better when the person stays visible behind the badge.
