Hull Beat United 2-0. Both Goals Came From Dead Balls.

Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday. Semi Ajayi and debutant Nobel Mendy scored from a corner and a free-kick. United's fourth opening-weekend defeat in seven seasons.

Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday 22 August, and the scoreline was simpler than the noise around it. Semi Ajayi forced home a rebound after a corner on 17 minutes. Nobel Mendy headed a Regan Slater free-kick on 38 minutes. Promoted Hull took three points from their first top-flight home game since 2017, and United left with the same away-game defending that haunted them last season.

Sky Sports called it Hull's first Premier League victory over United. The Premier League's own wrap noted their first league win over the club since 1974, when both sides were in the old Second Division.

How the game unfolded

Hull started brighter in the early kick-off. A 17th-minute corner sparked the opener. Slater drove the ball in, Oli McBurnie's effort was pushed onto the far post by Senne Lammens, and Ajayi crashed in the loose ball from close range. Ajayi told broadcasters he was "buzzing" to get Hull "on our way," and that the side was not listening to outside noise.

Seven minutes before half-time, Tielemans fouled Mohamed Belloumi outside the box. Slater whipped in the free-kick and Mendy powered a header past Lammens for his debut goal. Mendy is Hull's club-record signing and one of three summer recruits in Sergej Jakirovic's starting XI. Eight of the XI played Championship football for Hull last season.

Michael Carrick sent on Marcus Rashford at the interval for his first competitive Manchester United appearance in 618 days. United camped in Hull's half for long spells in the second period. Sky's report still had them struggling to turn possession into clear chances against a back line that held firm. Carrick later withdrew summer signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos together in the 66th minute, sending on Benjamin Sesko and Kobbie Mainoo to chase a goal that never came.

Hull's only blemish was injury. Both goalscorers went off in the second half. Jakirovic said Ajayi complained about his hamstring and Mendy about his adductor, with medical checks to follow. The Tigers still kept a clean sheet. Konstantinos Tzolakis was called into action late to preserve it.

Who stood up

Ajayi embodied the afternoon. He scored the opener, made five clearances and three recoveries before leaving just after the hour, and was named man of the match on several match reports. At the other end, Slater created both goals from dead balls. That detail matters because United's problems were not abstract. They failed to deal with a corner and a free-kick in the same half.

For United, Lammens made the save that kept McBurnie's name off the scoresheet. Bruno Fernandes told broadcast media that United made "the same mistakes as we did last season, every away game," which is a player saying the tape will be uncomfortable, not a fan account on a phone.

Carrick presented a calmer public face. The Guardian quoted him saying he was "talking to you quite calmly" while not "enjoying the day" inside, and that one game "won't knock us" or "change our direction." He also said United "have a bit to improve on." That is the minimum honest sentence after a defeat at a newly promoted side on opening weekend.

What the result actually settles

It does not settle the title race or even United's top-four credentials. It does settle opening-night optics. United finished 2025/26 strongly under Carrick and reached the Champions League. Saturday was their fourth opening-weekend Premier League defeat in seven seasons, per Sky Sports, and their first league loss to a promoted club on Matchweek 1.

The timing around Carlos Baleba makes the night louder without changing the score. Sky Sports reported on Friday that United agreed a £70m deal with Brighton for the midfielder, with a medical to follow. Baleba was never going to start at Hull while recovering from an ankle ligament issue. The bid still tells you Carrick wanted a third senior midfielder before the season began. United played the opener without him and without the defensive clarity he is supposed to bring.

Hull, meanwhile, gave Jakirovic a slice of history. The Premier League noted he is the first Bosnian manager to win a Premier League match. Captain Lewie Coyle told TNT Sports the squad "couldn't have dreamt of it any better." For a play-off winner with less pre-season runway than the automatic promoted clubs, that is not a small emotional deposit.

What comes next

Hull host fellow promoted side Coventry City in their first Premier League home game at the Coventry Building Society Arena on the weekend of 30 August, after an EFL Cup tie against Plymouth. United face Fulham at Old Trafford next before the Manchester derby on 13 September, with the window open until 1 September.

Carrick does not need to panic after one game. He does need answers on set-piece defending before the next away trip, and he needs to know whether Baleba's paperwork turns a summer chase into a midfield who can start fixing the problem on the training ground.
