Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg on Wednesday night. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened, Brian Madjo equalised on debut, and Désiré Doué restored Paris's lead after the hour. UEFA confirm Paris are only the third club to retain the Super Cup after Milan and Real Madrid.

How the night turned
Kvaratskhelia cut inside and smashed Paris ahead in the 20th minute after Doué found him. Villa did not fold. Madjo, at 17 years and 212 days, struck the post, missed from close range, then volleyed John McGinn's cross past Matvei Safonov on the stroke of half-time. UEFA record him as the youngest Super Cup scorer, breaking Patrick Kluivert's mark.
The second half opened with McGinn testing Safonov. Paris answered against the run of play. Substitute Ousmane Dembélé slipped Doué through and the finish settled the trophy in the 61st minute. Unai Emery sent on Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley. The equaliser did not come. Luis Enrique's side closed the night out.
What Villa showed
Villa arrived as Europa League champions. They started without Watkins, Martinez, and Konsa after World Cup duty. Against that PSG side, they still created enough to equalise and force Paris into a second-half response.
Emery told UEFA he was proud of the chances and the quality of the individuals. Emiliano Buendía put it simply: Villa competed, PSG took the clinical moments, and the gap felt smaller than the billing. That matters before Brighton on 23 August and before Champions League nights where the same rest-defence and midfield distances will be tested again.
Watch those midfield distances on PSG's first progression. Villa held a shape they could still recognise after the hour. That is usable evidence for Emery. It does not rewrite the result. They wanted the cup. They got a 2-1 defeat and a public look at how this squad travels without its World Cup returnees.
Emery has now lost all four Super Cups he has managed across Sevilla, Villarreal, and Villa. UEFA's key stats put that run in cold ink. The narrower read for Villa fans is clearer: this side can still force PSG into a contest when key absentees are missing. That is a baseline, not a coronation.
What Paris put on the table
Paris start another season with a trophy. Doué assisted and scored. UEFA named him Player of the Match. Enrique already owns three Super Cups as a coach with Barcelona and Paris. Only Ancelotti and Guardiola have more.
Paris face Lens in the Trophée des Champions on Sunday. Villa go to Mönchengladbach on Saturday, then Brighton. The Champions League league-phase draw lands on 27 August.
