Bukayo Saka scored on 59 minutes as champions Arsenal beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park on Monday 31 August. Riccardo Calafiori supplied the low centre from the left. Saka forced it home from close range. The win gives Mikel Arteta's side six points from two games to open the title defence. Villa remain pointless with zero shots on target across their opening two Premier League fixtures.
This was a different Villa from the side that lost 4-0 at Brighton on opening weekend. Unai Emery started debutants Zion Suzuki in goal and Nicolas Jackson up front. Leon Goretzka featured in midfield. The rebuilt spine competed. It did not score.
How the game unfolded
Villa began brightly. Emiliano Buendia crashed a 20-yard effort against David Raya's crossbar on 12 minutes, per Sky Sports. The Holte End sensed a response after the Brighton humiliation. Arsenal, unchanged from the 3-0 win over Coventry, controlled possession and probed from set pieces. Gabriel's mistimed header was their best first-half chance.
Arteta substituted Christos Tzolis at half-time after a booking and a night of frustration. Eberechi Eze's introduction unlocked more threat down the right. Saka grew into the game as Villa's discipline held.
On 56 minutes, Saka went down under Ian Maatsen's challenge. The referee initially pointed to the spot. VAR reviewed the contact and ruled the foul was outside the penalty area. Arsenal took the free kick. Three minutes later, the same two players combined for the goal that mattered.
Calafiori drove to the byline and cut the ball back low. Saka arrived ahead of Matty Cash and bundled it in. Villa pushed for an equaliser. George Hemmings and John McGinn worked openings. None forced a save Raya had to make from a shot on target.
Who stood out
Saka has now scored in both league games this season. His movement between Cash and Maatsen created the decisive moment after the VAR frustration. Calafiori's assist underlined why Arteta trusts the left-sided defender in tight games.
Suzuki replaced Emiliano Martinez, who joined Chelsea for £7.5m last week. The Japan goalkeeper became the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League, per match reports. He spilled one cross early but recovered to deny Kai Havertz one-on-one on 75 minutes. Havertz was offside. Even so, Suzuki's distribution, including a driven pass to Hemmings that drew Neville's praise on co-commentary, looked like a weapon Emery can build around.
Jackson held up play in flashes without registering a shot on target. Goretzka competed beside Boubacar Kamara with Joao Gomes suspended. The spine is new. The connection is not there yet.
Arsenal's bench told the other story. Bruno Guimaraes came on and, per Gary Neville on Sky Sports, "cuts through with his passing" rather than recycling possession. Ezri Konsa, signed from Villa for £55m on 21 August, made his return to Villa Park as a substitute for Cristhian Mosquera. Villa finished without testing Raya on target. Arsenal finished with game management and depth.
What the managers said
Arteta told Sky Sports it was a "massive win" and a "great squad performance" because "when 11 wasn't enough the finishers came in." He referenced last season's defeat at Villa Park, when Arsenal lost "with the last kick of the game." That memory clearly drove the approach.
Emery focused on progress. He said Villa "competed well" and praised Suzuki and Jackson's debuts. "We didn't create clear chances but we didn't concede clear chances," he said. "Some players made their debut, fantastic." Villa have 38 matches left. They have zero points and zero shots on target. Optimism needs evidence soon.
What it means
Arsenal join Manchester City on six points at the top of the early table. The champions travel to face a Chelsea side with six points of their own next. Villa visit Hull City on the weekend with Emery needing a first goal and a first result before the window shuts at 23:00 BST on Tuesday.
The £51m sale of Ollie Watkins to Al-Hilal funded this rebuild. Monday night showed improved structure without end product. Suzuki passed the first exam. Jackson and Goretzka still need time. Arsenal showed why they remain the team to beat: different solutions from the bench, a talisman who delivers when the game is tight, and a defence that gave Villa nothing on target across 90 minutes.
