Chelsea reached agreement with AS Monaco to sign Lamine Camara for about £38m on 30 August, per Metro, Goal, and transfer reporter Sacha Tavolieri. The deal is worth roughly €45m including bonuses. Payment schedule details remain to be finalised, but Camara is expected in London for a medical in the coming hours.
The move is designed to unlock Enzo Fernandez's exit to Manchester City. Fernandez was left out of Chelsea's matchday squad for the second consecutive game as the Blues beat Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. City missed Chelsea's £120m deadline earlier in August but talks have continued through the final window days. Alonso has told staff he wants a replacement signed before sanctioning Fernandez's departure.
Camara is 22, has 49 Senegal caps, and registered six goals and 11 assists in 75 appearances for Monaco since a €15m move from Metz in 2024. Liverpool, Manchester United, and Crystal Palace were linked earlier in the summer. Chelsea won the race for Alonso's top midfield target with 24 hours left before the window shuts at 23:00 BST on 1 September.
What Monaco lose
Monaco bought Camara from Metz for €15m in 2024. Two Ligue 1 seasons later, they sell for nearly triple that fee with bonuses attached. Tavolieri reported Camara started against Marseille on Sunday evening, which may be his final appearance in France before completing the move.
The midfielder featured at the 2026 World Cup for Senegal and at the Africa Cup of Nations. Monaco lose a player who covered ground in a midfield three and could influence build-up and the final third. Selling before deadline day also gives them cash to reinvest in a market that closes Tuesday night.
For Chelsea, the fee is mid-table by their summer standards after £117m for Morgan Rogers and £7.5m for Emiliano Martinez. Camara is younger, cheaper, and bought to start rather than sit behind an incumbent.
What Chelsea need in football terms
Fernandez is a controlling deep midfielder who scored 15 goals under Enzo Maresca last season when pushed forward. Camara is a different profile. Football Today described him as more dynamic: he covers distance, presses aggressively, and can affect both defensive and attacking phases.
That profile suits a double pivot beside Moises Caicedo. Chelsea's Sunday win over Brighton featured Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, and Cole Palmer in the goals column, but Caicedo left the pitch injured in the closing stages. Depth in central midfield is not a luxury when Alonso is managing European absence and a Fernandez sale.
Martinez made his debut in the same game. Jordan Henderson arrived on a free. Valentin Barco came from Strasbourg. The spine is being rebuilt in real time while league points are already on the board. Camara gives Alonso a body who can run the middle third without needing the ball at his feet for 90 minutes.
The risk
The deal is conditional on Fernandez leaving. If City refuse Chelsea's revised asking price, Camara's registration may stall and Alonso faces a squad with a player who wants out and no signed replacement. Metro reported Chelsea could demand more than £120m now the original deadline has passed.
Camara is also not a proven Premier League midfielder. Ligue 1 form does not always travel. At 22, he has room to grow, but Chelsea are buying him to start in a league that punished their defensive lapses twice in two games. Brighton scored three at Stamford Bridge. Fulham took points at the Bridge on opening weekend.
Fernandez's relationship with the crowd remains fragile. Camara arrives without that baggage, which helps, but he also arrives without Fernandez's Champions League pedigree or Maresca trust.
What to watch before Tuesday
Watch whether City lodge a fresh bid that satisfies Chelsea before 23:00 BST on 1 September. Watch Camara's medical and registration timing. Watch who starts beside Caicedo if Fernandez is sold midweek.
Chelsea have six points from two games and a perfect start under Alonso on paper. The midfield file is the one that could still blow open in the final 36 hours of the window.
